Ph.D. Program
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants for the Electrical Engineering Ph.D. program must meet the following criteria in order to be considered for admission:
- GRE test scores (All applicants are encouraged to submit test scores from the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Applicants who do not have a B.S or M.S degree from an American university are required to submit the GRE (General) scores. These test scores are required of all applicants with undergraduate degree from international universities.)
- Minimum score of 550 (written test) or 213 (computer-based) on TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).
- Undergraduate and/or graduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
In addition, applicants for the Electrical Engineering Ph.D. program must present evidence that they are capable of doing independent work of distinction.
COURSE REQUIRMENTS
Students will normally take at least eight (8) 300's level (graduate) courses beyond the Master's degree or its equivalent in the same or a similar field. In addition, it is expected that each student will participate in a number of independent activities such as presentations in the ECE 311 seminar course (at least two for students in the Control and Communication Systems area, and directed reading and research. At least 15 credits of GRAD 495 (Dissertation Research) must be included in the plan of study.
STANDARD FOR MAINTENANCE OF ACADEMIC STATUS
Each student must maintain a 3.0 overall GPA to remain in good standing. Each student must also be registered for 9 credits or more to be considered full-time unless authorized by their academic advisor for approved research.
STANDARDS FOR ACADEMIC PROBATION
Students who drop below a 3.0 overall GPA in any semester are informed by the Graduate School and the Electrical Engineering Program that they are on academic probation. They then have one semester to raise the GPA to 3.0 or better. Failure to do so will result in academic dismissal. A student cannot earn the Ph. D. degree with a final GPA below 3.0
READMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS
If a student has withdrawn from the program in good standing, then they may be readmitted in the future without a formal application. If more than 5 years have elapsed, the student must obtain permission from the Dean or Program Director.
If a student has withdrawn or been dismissed because of academic probation, the student must obtain permission from the Dean before being re-admitted.
All readmitted student must satisfy the academic standard and curriculum in effect at the time of readmission.
PROGRAM COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS
To earn the Electrical Engineering Ph.D. degree, all students must:
- have at least two journal papers submitted, with at least one of them already having gone through the review cycle favorably
[ for all PhD defenses after January 1, 2009, the new minimum publication requirement will be:
a) by the time of the prospectus: 2 conference proceedings (CP) (full) paper accepted with first authorship
(Journal Papers may be substituted fot Conference Proceedings.)
b) by the time of the defense: 2 journal papers accepted with first authorship] - have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
- have completed a minimum of 24 credits of graduate coursework
- pass a two-part general examination near the end of the formal course work
- complete a dissertation which represents
a significant contribution to the field
