Our People
Quing Zhu obtained her Ph.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania and is currently a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Connecticut in Storrs CT. Professor Zhu is a leading researcher in combining ultrasound and NIR imaging modalities for clinical diagnosis of breast cancers. This combined approach offers the following advantages: a) ultrasound localization overcomes the localization uncertainty of optical reconstruction, and b) the use of high cancer-to-tissue optical contrast improves the ultrasound diagnosis. She and her team have explored the theory and modeling behind this novel technique and have conducted clinical studies at the UConn Health Center and Hartford Hospital. Initial results have shown great success in early diagnosis of malignant and benign breast lesions using this technique. Professor Zhu has also extended this technology to monitor the neoadjuvant chemotherapy responses of advanced breast cancers. Her pioneering research has now been lauded by the imaging and radiology community as an important advance in society's ability to distinguish benign and malignant lesions in the breast without recourse to biopsy. The studies were selected as platform presentations of the 2007 and 2008 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposiums and highlighted in the Symposium News Letters. The study has received publicity in news releases of the Radiological Society of North America, the prestigious Society of Radiology and Imaging in 2005 and 2010. In addition, Professor Zhu and her team have pioneered simultaneous radiation detection and Optical Coherence Tomography imaging for coronary plaque and ovarian cancer detection. She and her team have also made important contributions to the photoacoustic imaging system and device developments relating to ovarian cancer detection.
