CSI Technical Lead (Senior Computer Programmer/Analyst)

The Comcast Center for Excellence for Security Innovation (CSI) in the College of Engineering at the University of Connecticut conducts cutting edge research in hardware, software and network security in collaboration with COMCAST and with the support of the CHASE center. CSI projects include research and holistic assessment of the security of multiple platform used by COMCAST. CSI seeks to hire a technical lead on service activities and also assist on engineering tasks for various research projects.  This position also entails the technical support of events, specifically CyberSEED and other related events.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provides leadership for various projects related to hardware, software and network security; establishing priorities in conjunction with faculty researchers and Comcast.
  2. Establishes internal project goals and parameters; hires, trains, evaluates and assigns tasks to staff.
  3. Plans and coordinates the implementation of strategic phases for the project; evaluates and creates statistical and narrative reports to support the goals of the project and proposed direction.
  4. Closely collaborate with Faculty on initiatives related to the center including reporting mechanisms, implementation of new attacks, development of new solutions, etc.
  5. Conduct security and vulnerability assessments and audits on hardware and software in embedded platform.
  6. Develop and implement mitigation and countermeasure strategies.
  7. Design hardware and software solutions for use in research projects.
  8. Writing reports for delivery to clients and funding agencies.
  9. Communicate with sponsor(s) on various research and service activities.
  10. Contribute to publications: work closely with Faculty and students.
  11. Coordinates efforts with sponsors and/or University departments;
  12. Measures and assesses the needs and/or efficiency of present technical systems and makes recommendations for future needs; evaluating, selecting, and installing new equipment; or studying new techniques for data collection.
  13. In assigned area of responsibility, reviews operating procedures for efficiency and effectiveness; may participate in planning and decisions regarding new or changed procedures.
  14. Assesses the computer and/or technical needs for the project and develops appropriate systems.
  15. May create comprehensive reports and present findings.
  16. Attend weekly meetings with research group, sponsors and agencies.
  17. Make presentations related to center activities (research, education and services).
  18. May require travel.
  19. Perform system administration duties as required.
  20. Performs other related duties as required.
  21. Plan and control the events hosted by center throughout the year, in particular, CyberSEED.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s degree in computer science or computer engineering.
  2. Experience in IT, security, software development, or hardware development.
  3. Strong written and verbal skills.
  4. Understanding of security principles, policies and best practices.
  5. Experience using, customizing and developing open source security tools.
  6. Experience with multiple programming languages (C in particular) and shell scripting.
  7. Experience with UNIX operating systems and internals. Linux experience is ideal.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. At least 2 years of experience in IT, security, software development or hardware development.
  2. Experience with hardware test equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, etc.
  3. Experience with penetration testing tools such as, Nexpose or Metasploit.
  4. Experience with security tools, e.g., nmap, ethercap, WireShark, etc.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 12-month position based on available funding, subject to annual review. Salary will be commensurate with successful candidate’s background and experience.
