Electronics and Photonics

Electronics systems manipulate electrical currents using devices such as transistors, diodes, and integrated circuits. These components control or amplify the flow of current and convert it from one form to another.

Photonics involves the manipulation of light (in the form of photons) through emission, transmission, modulation, signal processing, switching, amplification, and sensing.  This research area involves many unique technologies including lasers, fiber optics, imaging tools and plasma.

Electronics and photonics are used in applications such as communications, computing, defense, medical diagnostics, manufacturing and more.

Some specific research areas in this field include:

  • Semiconductors – Semiconductor materials, and transport of electricity in semiconductor devices, and defect engineering in semiconductors
  • Fiber Optics - Fiber optic high speed digital and high frequency network implementation, optical network architectures and enabling components for high speed digital transmission over optical fibers
  • Imaging - 3D imaging and bio-photonics, real-time image recognition, optical signal processing systems, image processing
  • Plasma - Plasma based particle accelerators and high-power light sources, novel radiation sources in magnetized plasma
