Systems

Systems is a broad subset of electrical engineering that attempts to provide a mathematical framework that can describe not only electrical systems but a wide variety of complex systems.  Examples of these systems include the power grid, transportation systems, aircraft and automobiles, communication systems, manufacturing systems and even biological systems.

Some specific research areas in this field include:

  • Communications - Wireless communications systems and multi-user detection in wireless communications, wireless radio, underwater acoustics, optical wireless communication
  • Surveillance - Target tracking with radar, sonar, and infrared sensors
  • Signal processing - Sensors to extract info on targets moving in space, air, land or underwater, remote sensing and data fusion from multiple moving targets (as in air traffic control)
  • Optimization - Model-based and data-driven fault diagnosis, detection theory
  • Neuronal modeling - Neural processing of sound information in the brain
  • Systems engineering – Modeling large scale systems and optimizing systems design
