Toward Smart and Secure Cyber Physical Systems

Abstract: The recently advancements in artificial intelligence has witnessed tremendous excitements worldwide from academia, industry, and government. This impressive progress not only demonstrated the power of machine learning over complicated tasks, but also provided the opportunity of artificial intelligence to play a critical role in a wide range of critical cyber-physical systems (CPS). It is well known that CPS plays an increasingly important role in critical infrastructure and everyday life, such as energy systems, automobiles, medical devices, communication networks, to name a few. Each includes smart networked systems with embedded sensors, processors and actuators that sense and interact with the physical world and support real-time, guaranteed performance in safety-critical applications. At the same time, CPS systems also increase security risks and provide attack surfaces. The consequences of unintentional faults and malicious attacks could have severe impact on human lives, economy, and the society.
To this end, this talk aims to review and discuss the recent research developments in the interface of “AI” and “cybersecurity” with the objective towards smart and secure CPS. The joint presentation will emphasize the critical needs, methodologies, and applications in this critical area, and also highlight its applications in smart grid. We hope this seminar will also motive research collaborations in these emerging areas, and also develop innovative frameworks and platforms for workforce development and outreach activities to prepare future professionals for this critical field.
Bio: Haibo He (IEEE Fellow) is the Robert Haas Endowed Chair Professor at the University of Rhode Island, Kingston, RI, USA. He has published numerous highly cited papers and delivered more than 80 invited/keynote/plenary talks around the globe. He was the Chair of IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) Emergent Technologies Technical Committee (ETTC) (2015) and Neural Networks Technical Committee (NNTC) (2013 and 2014). He received numerous awards including the IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) “Best Paper Award”, IEEE CIS “Outstanding Early Career Award”, and NSF “Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award”. Currently, he is the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems.
Yan Sun (IEEE Fellow) received her B.S. degree with the highest honor from Peking University in 1998, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Maryland in 2004. She joined the University of Rhode Island in 2004, where she is currently a professor in the department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Sun is the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE SPS SigPort (2015 – 2017), and an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Signal and Information Processing over Networks. She was an elected member of the Information Forensics and Security Technical Committee (2014-2016), and served on the editorial broad of IEEE Security and Privacy Magazine (2013-2015). Her research interests include cyber-physical system security, trustworthy social computing, power grid security, and network security.
